Amanda Reads – December 2017

December went a lot better when it came to reading! I finished ten books and three graphic novels, and I’m all set for the reading marathon that January is bringing (because I’m a second round Cybils judge, as I talked about last fall). So let’s get down to business (no Huns necessary here).

Here’s a reminder of the rating system (puppies!):

The Chaos of Standing Still by Jessica Brody

Oh, this book was so sweet. I really loved it. You can read my full review here.

Wrong to Need You by Alisha Rai

This book was the best. I loved it so much and I can’t wait for the last book in the series. So wonderful. You can read my full review here.

The Sweetheart Sham by Danielle Ellison

Meh. I didn’t hate this book, but I also didn’t love it. A solid meh. You can read my full review here.

Brooding YA Hero by Carrie Ann DiRisio

Sadly, I DNFed this one, even though I wanted to like it so much. You can read about it here.

Bitch Planet: Triple Feature Vol. 1 by Kelly Sue DeConnick

A fun, strange, disturbing look into the world of Bitch Planet. I’ll probably review this eventually, but I haven’t yet.

Rating: 3 dogs petted.

Girl Made of Stars by Ashley Herring Blake

I loved this book so much, even though I won’t be reviewing it until much closer to its publication date (which is in May 2018). So stay tuned for that!

Miles Away from You by A.B. Rutledge

Another that I read pretty far in advance – full review coming in March 2018. I really enjoyed it, even though it took some getting used to the format.

Rating: 3 dogs petted.

Grrl Scouts: Magic Socks by Jim Mahfood

Super violent, and I didn’t really get it, which made it difficult to get into. Ended in a DNF.

Wonder Woman (Rebirth) Vol. 4: Godwatch by Greg Rucka

It was so nice to jump back into the Rebirth universe of Wonder Woman, but Godwatch didn’t do it for me like the earlier volumes did. Will be reviewing eventually (hopefully soon).

Busted by Gina Ciocca

This was so fun, and I read it super fast! And it’s out today! I had a couple of complaints, which you can read about in my full review here, but it was good overall.

Whitey on Trial: Secrets, Corruption, and the Search for the Truth by Margaret McLean and Jon Leiberman

A gem of an audiobook find from my local library – H and I listened during our 13-hour Christmas holiday car ride. Super interesting. Would recommend to people who take an interest in court cases, RICO, and organized crime stuff in particular. I probably won’t do a full review, but I did enjoy it.

Rating: 3 dogs petted.

Ghostland: An American History in Haunted Places by Colin Dickey

I plan on writing a full review of this one at some point, but know that it was fun and a little spooky and a cool look at history that I was able to absorb while on long marathon-training runs.

Rating: 3 dogs petted.

Reign of the Fallen by Sarah Glenn Marsh

I finished this on New Year’s Eve, and man, it was a slog for me. I think I’m just not into the necromancer thing, but I don’t know. It wasn’t bad, I just wasn’t that invested in it. Full review to come next week!

Rating: 2 dogs petted.

There you have it – a very busy, very solid December of reading. Not a bad way to round out 2017, if I do say so myself. And a happy New Year!

Happy reading, y’all!
